Breaking into private equity and venture capital

Private equity and venture capital recruit through a small number of channels, on timelines that differ by strategy and by firm size. This guide sets out what each track does, how it hires, and where Johns Hopkins students and alumni can begin.

Two ways firms hire

Large funds fill associate seats in a short, headhunter-led window known as on-cycle. Everyone else hires when a seat opens, which is off-cycle. Most routes into the industry, and nearly all routes for venture capital and search funds, are off-cycle.

The calendar

Off-cycle hiring clusters in February to May and September to November. On-cycle has no fixed date: the 2027 class was recruited on January 5–6, 2026, and at least one large fund has said it will delay its next cycle.

Preparing

Interviews across tracks test the same things: deal experience, a paper LBO, a timed modelling test and an investment case. A sensible order: learn the vocabulary, work a case, practise the technical tests, build a target list, and use warm introductions. Public events are a low-cost way to meet practitioners.
